Life in Frankfurt

Crap I've collected and saved over the years.  I plan to make this into a section showing what life was like in Frankfurt.
For right now, it's just some concert tickets and other scrapbook things.  These are from my personal collection and not a reflection of everyone's tastes.

Ronnie James Dio with Warlock opening at the Offenbach Stadthalle  [Northeast Frankfurt].

I missed the Def Leppard show a few weeks before this [the big return to playing live on the Hysteria tour]. This show, with Dokken made up for it.  The Festhalle was west of the center of town, I think.

Doro Pesch was cool enough to sign this in Offenbach.  I was the only guy in the crowd who called out "Miss Pesch", instead of  "Doro, Doro!"  She also signed a Full-sized poster, "To all the American Friends, all my love Doro Pesch".

Monsters of Rock

The Monsters of Rock was a semi annual festival held at Castle Donnington in England.  It toured the European continent as well, eventually spawning a watered down American tour.

1986 1987-This was a few months before I arrived. 1988-Missed this one, even tho' I was in country at this point.  And telling me you went, will not make things better.

The Bundesgartenshäu or BUGA is a huge garden event held in Germany, with each city getting something like 10 years to prepare.  Frankfurt was ready in 7 or 8 that year, for which they won critical acclaim.  The park area covered a large chunk of real estate, somewhere behind the Fernmeldetürm or Signal Tower and reached as far as the fairgrounds where the Dippemess was held [or close to it].

Mötley Crüe

Skid Row

The Dr. Feelgood Album went #1 in America the night of this show.  Both bands really put on a great show.

Recent efforts by both have never reached what they put out at this point.

Sachsenhausen

Sachs, if you were to look in a tour guide, is the Apple Wine district.  [Most net searches will lead you to the other Sachsenhausen, which was a concentration camp in WWII.] You could find Apple Wine, but it has been known mostly as the GI Party district for many years.  Imagine a small, closed-in area of buildings, with at least one bar or nightclub on at least one floor.  Most were GI-friendly, many were not [which led to some people's first ever experience with discrimination: "Sorry, no American's allowed"].

Although Frankfurt's main brewery is Henninger, with it's barrel shaped restaurant; one of the highlights of a visit to Sachs was Kulmbacher Reichelbrau's Eisbock.

This thick, molasses-like beverage was basically a strong Döppelbock, frozen, which then had the water extracted.  At 24% alcohol [sold in 4 packs only], the ebony liquid would not allow light to pass through it.  If you enjoyed it and have read the link, you know Eisbock is gone forever.

I have Capt. Chadwick's Sachs photos and some video, which I will extract stills from.  Watch for it.

Negativ

This place was just outside Sachs.   You hadda be there...

...we did find out what Frauendisco means tho'.

This place had pretty good food.  It was on the way to Sachs.

Rosie's Eric Clapton ticket, I didn't go to this, but she said it was ok.

Disneyland After Dark, until dear ol' Walt sued 'em.  Now it' s just D.A.D.  Why this band isn't famous is beyond me.  The Batschkapp, which was not too far from the Weißerstein train/bus stop, shook that night.  Other people who played there, on their way to fame were: Sade, Sinead O' Conner, Fishbone, Liquid Jesus, Phish.

Rodriguez only agreed to drive us  to this, because he thought I'd said it was in Hanau!

The Rolling Stones. This was one of the best stage shows I've seen.  The Waldstadion is a soccer stadium in south central Frankfurt.

Little Feat was quite possibly the most boring show ever.

Roger Waters performs the Wall: live in Berlin, July 1990

Fillwood was in Bad Vilbel, [North East of Edwards Kaserne] in a residential area.  Not a lot of GI's went there [in my time] and the large sign on the outside wall, basically warned GI's to behave or never be allowed back.  This was one of the pictures on the wall there.

Monsters of Rock 1991
The USO ticket.  This baby was signed by all the members of Queensrÿche several years later in Seattle, a story for another day. [Thanks Alec]. The Poster The German ticket.

Fishbone and Liquid Jesus at the Batschkapp.
