Read the Contributors page first!

If you have them on another site, send me the link to them.  If you have images scanned, send them in.

Nice tattoo!

...in HONOR of the PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE 143RD Signal Battalion members, I had OUR CREST PROUDLY TATTOOED onto my LEFT shoulder which PROUDLY coincides with the PATCH of the 3RD ARMORED DIVISION SPEARHEAD TATTOO on my RIGHT shoulder. So now there are more than 3 IMAGES on the net that proudly display our unit.

A note from PJ:

Hello everyone-

Sorry I haven't sent a mass email in FOREVER... So much has happened - including losing two friends and fellow soldiers in the Kabul VBIED on September 8th - that I couldn't begin to write about it. The stuff I went through the last few months made me not want to share with family and friends, in that I didn't want everyone to worry too much. I hope everyone assumed that 'no news is good news'. I did keep posting photos to my flickr.com account - so that would help show some of what I've been up to:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/violinsoldier

An article was published (partially about me) in the Stuttgarter Zeitung (Germany) on August 16th, and CNN used one of my Steve Irwin tributes on television.
I am leaving Afghanistan in about 20 days - sometime after my birthday (the 8th) ... I should be at Fort Carson for a few days, then back to Jefferson City. I am sure they will have a ceremony of some kind, then it's home to KCMO, NLT than the end of October :) Just in time for Hallowe'en and curling season! (And to watch the Cardinals win the World Series)...
I'm sooo ready to come back home. I'll probably not have to go to work at the VA for a little while - I'll more than likely make a little road trip to Illinois, Indiana, etc., to see family and friends. We'll have to see on that - November may not be the best month for traveling. I also want to make sure I do something extra special for November 11th (VETERANS DAY) - especially to honor SSG Ron Paul and SFC Meredith Howard - the two fine soldiers we lost in Kabul:

See http://www.flickr.com/photos/violinsoldier/237698985/
I'll fill everyone in on what they missed eventually :)
I'll see everyone real, real soon -
Love and prayers from Afghanistan-

Patrick

Travel Outside of U.S., Immigration
Wait 12 months after travel in an area where malaria is found. Wait 3 years after moving to the United States after living in a country where malaria is found. Persons who have spent long periods of time in countries where "mad cow disease" is found are not eligible to donate. This requirement is related to concerns about variant Creutzfeld Jacob Disease (vCJD). Learn more about vCJD and donation. Persons who were born in or who lived in certain countries in Western Africa, or who have had close contact with persons who were born in or who lived in certain West African countries are not eligible to donate. This requirement is related to concerns about HIV Group O. Learn more about HIV Group O, and the specific African countries where it is found.

In-Depth Discussion of Variant Creutzfeld-Jacob Disease and Blood Donation

In some parts of the world, cattle can get an infectious, fatal brain disease called Mad Cow Disease. In these same locations, humans have started to get a new disease called variant Creutzfeld-Jacob Disease (vCJD) which is also a fatal brain disease. Scientists believe that vCJD is Mad Cow Disease that has somehow transferred to humans, possibly through the food chain.

There is no evidence that vCJD can be transmitted from donors to patients through transfusion. However, nobody knows for certain that this cannot happen, and animal studies indicate that it is theoretically possible. There is no test for vCJD in humans that could be used to screen blood donors and to protect the blood supply. This means that blood programs must take special precautions to keep vCJD out of the blood supply by avoiding collections from those who have been where this disease is found.

At this time, the American Red Cross donor eligibility rules related to vCJD are as follows:

I found out today that my friend who I'd been looking for, for 10 years, was living just 2 hours away and had died a year ago.  A memorial is here.

The Cafe Press store name is now Voice of Iron: The 143rd Signal Battalion (143rdsignalbn).

7/30/2002

Look, I updated this page!

The 143rd Signal Battalion vets have proposed a reunion [143rd-all eras], in Cleveland, for the Memorial Day weekend of 2003. To make it easier to discuss the reunion planning we have a forum at DelphiForums.com with a message board & live chat area called the "Day Room" at: URL: http://forums.delphiforums.com/143rdSigBn/start

If you've never used DelphiForums.com before, you'll need to go through a quick registration.  Email me for instructions.

Hope to see you there.

Steven Smith has volunteered server space to host the image files for the site.  I am in the midst of changing references now, which may take a few weeks.  Be sure to email Steve and thank him.

Added a few new things, and went over my space limit on Tripod.  I had to remove some pages and images-see the TOC for details.  This site needs a new home!!!  Anyone have a suggestion on better free hosting?

The Email account webmaster@voiceofiron.com may be infected.  I have not sent any emails out lately.  Please update your home/work anti-virus product.  I have advised the people providing the account and they are working on it.  I hope to have a better solution, but you can always post to the guestbook.

2/16/2002

The first items from the Voice of Iron store are available.

Sweatshirts, T-shirts, Mugs and Hats from Cafe Press.com.

2/4/02 Added a search form to the "Home" page.  Other recent changes: modified the look of the WTC pages, added CVN George Washington image, taken in NY Harbor September 12th, 2001.  Emailed a few people about a reunion in Cleveland.  Anyone going to the 3AD reunion?

12/24/01 Added the Battalion Roster.  This was suggested by LTC Ron Stephens as a way to view all the soldiers assigned to the unit by date.  I had to use what was posted in the guest book, much of which had month and year changes as people forget things and then change them.  The "Lost Souls" are those who neglected to tell us which company they were in and when, but they can email it in.

12/24/01 Added Communications on a mobile battlefield in the 100 hours war This article originally appeared in Army Communicator in the Spring 1991 issue and was co-written by CPT Bryan S. Goda and CPT Robert M. Prudhomme.  Research to locate the article by Ms. Lisa Alley, Editor, Army Communicator.  Send her a thank you email for providing it to us.

12/01/01

Fixed the Guest Book (again).  Fixed broken links.

11/8/01

Added new pages.  Reorganized site.

11/4/01 Added Option to skip past the Flash Intro.

Added Civilian entries to the Rank Drop-Down list in the Guest Book.

Added Afghanistan to the Wartime Service Drop-Down list in the Guest Book.

Removed link to Lycos Video Share on the June 16, 1991 page.
