Cove man identified as civilian killed in Iraq

BY DEBBIE STEVENSON
Herald Staff Writer

A local company Wednesday confirmed the death of a Copperas Cove man this week in Iraq.

Brent McJennett, a 40-year-old Desert Storm veteran , was working for Proactive Communications Inc. of Killeen when he was killed late Monday after his vehicle ran over an improvised explosive device in Tikrit.

McJennett was a network support specialist who had volunteered to install, commission and support satellite ground stations to provide Internet and telephone service for the soldiers of Task Force Ironhorse, company officials said Wednesday. McJannett had just finished a job and was traveling in an Army vehicle between Tikrit and Baqouba when the attack occurred.

"We are saddened by the death of Brent," said Marc Legare, the company's business manager. "He was a terrific worker, very enthusiastic and brought a terrific breadth of skills to the company."

Born Dec. 12, 1962, in Mount Cleens, Mich., McJennett graduated from East Detroit High School in 1981. He then enlisted in the Army, where he worked with numerous communications devices and Mobile Subscriber equipment .

During his 16 years in the Army, he was sent to Korea, Germany and also to Kuwait during the 1991 Persian Gulf War. His last assignment was at Fort Hood in 1998 .

McJennett left the Army to enroll in college.

His mother, Donna McJennett, told the Detroit Free Press that her son decided he needed a college degree. He was able to complete that goal and take care of his son, Aaron, while his wife, Dawn, worked as a nurse.

"That was really cool," his mother told the paper. "Sometimes things happen for a reason, and in that year and a half, his son became so close to him."

After completing college, McJennett used his communications skills in technology-based fields, serving in such roles as fiber-optic test analyst and senior electronics mechanic with Dynamic Technical Services and Dell before joining Proactive.

McJennett also became a regular participant in the Killeen Daily Herald's online chat room for military issues. During those communications, McJennett debated hot topics, and announced his departure for Iraq.

His final message on Nov. 9 from Iraq told "the regulars" he had made it.

"It's Dodge City here," he wrote. "Hello to all the regulars that remember me."

According to the company news release, McJennett loved motorcycles, especially his V Star 1100, and he was an active member of the Texas Chisholm Trail, a component of the Southern Cruisers Riding Club. He remained connected to his military friends through Web sites such as the Korean War Project and the 143rd Signal Battalion .

He also used his computer skills to manage a family Web site that displayed pictures of his family and friends.

"Brent was devoted to the outdoors, barbecues and his family," the release stated. "He will be remembered by family and friends as a focused family man, a excellent father, and loving husband."

Although he was only in Iraq for a few days, Legare said McJennett was enthusiastic about his Iraq mission.

"He was exceptionally motivated in his support for the soldiers of Task Force Ironhorse," Legare said. "In our last communication with him, he said he was very thankful to serve soldiers again."

McJennett's military awards include the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal (fourth award), the Good Conduct Medal (third award), the Southwest Asia Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars and the Kuwait Liberation Medal .

Legare said the company is committed to continued support for McJennett's family.

McJennett is survived by his wife and his 4-year-old son; his 17-year-old daughter Samantha; his brother, Antonio McJennett Jr., and sister, Renee Kemplay; and his parents, Donna and Antonio McJennett Sr., who reside in Chesterfield Township, Mich.

A call to the family's home in Copperas Cove went unanswered Wednesday.

According to messages on the Herald's Web site, plans are being made for a funeral for McJennett either Friday or Saturday in Michigan.

Ironic coincidence or ?

From the Webmaster:
As of last week, I've lost at least 1-2 years worth of 143rd related email and contact information, which despite the best efforts of some heavy duty recovery tools, seems to be gone forever. I was getting ready for my end of year back up too, which makes it all the worse. Any thing older than 2003 is at least somewhere on a CD. The site stuff is backed up as well.

Back up your home PC people. Do it now.

The store was not shut down by Cafe Press as they threatened. Don't know why, but I am happy about it. I am still asking for "action shots" of you with your 143rd gear if you have bought any to post on the site. Oh yeah, and BUY SOMETHING!

I have not had much time to work on getting things back online, but hope to get to it before the end of the year.

I have recently returned to college and I am taking German as an elective. While I was there I spoke fairly fluent German but, as happens to most of us, I have forgotten most of what I knew. One of the assignments for the class is a group presentation about a subject agreed to by the professor. Since I am one of the few students who was fortunate to have spent time in Europe I thought it would be very interesting as well as educational to do my presentation on my recollections of Frankfurt and my time in the U.S. Army although some of it was not pleasant. I have downloaded several pictures of parts of Frankfurt that I remember and I found a picture of Edwards Kaserne circa 1963 which was only shortly before I was there. I gather that Edwards Kaserne is no longer there. Is that also true of Drake Kaserne and if so where is 3rd Armored Division Headquarters located now as well as the 143rd Signal Battallion? I would also like to inquire about two people I have lost contact with over the years to see if anyone knows how I might contact them. They both to Frankfurt the same time as I but I got an early out to go to college and they both got out in March of 1967. There names are Patrick Austin Ryan and Glen Alan Ferrara. I would really like to know what has happened to them. Needless to say, I was very surprised to find a home page for the 143rd Signal Battalion as well as the 3rd Armored Division. If anyone feels that they can provide useful information to help with the presentation it would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely Samuel McKelvey

Our friends in the Marines at Camp Pendleton are living in sub-standard housing, in conditions which are appalling, and possibly a threat to their health and the health of their families.

Does anyone remember the following A company personnel- Capt.Black, Lt.Martz, SSG Thomas, SSG Ernie Stublefield, FirstSgt VanWert? and how about the great bratwurst and rolls from that little stand across the street? Also, I have fond memories of some of the small towns and villages in our maneuver and alert area like Alsfeld, Lauterbach, Schlitz and Schotten. I participated in an enlisted command day in 1977 when the battalion was under the command of SP4's and PFC's for a regular duty day. Does any- one remember anything like this happening after 1978?

Many years have passed, and although i'm no longer in the military, I often think back to my days in the 143rd Sig Bn. Some of it was fun, some of course was pure BS, but I survived, just like the rest of the people before me. I can't say, " and after", because I was one of the last people to leave Drake-Edwards after they closed us down. Had a lot of great memories in the 143rd Sig Bn ,,,,, Johns bar across the street was always a great place for some late night food or to suck down some beers.. i spent two years in Frankfurt the spent my final six months in Schotten at 88 Relay ... that was a great place to work nice little town to live in ..
