I was in the 143rd Armord Signal Company from June 1955 till May of 1958. We became a Battalion in '57 but I can't recall which company I was assigned to. Anyway I was in Division Signal Maintenance as a Field Radio Repairman MOS 296.2. We giro'ed to Germany and I spent two great years there. Some of the names I remember from Ft. Knox Basic Training days are: Frank Thacher, Dave Brill, Jim Benadick, Frank Snagowski, Ray Dixon, Evin G.(Red) Howell, Dick McNay,Larry Howells, Dennis Jordan, Don Yoakum,Dick Smith, Marchie Cornielison, Bob Reed, Willie Mack. That's about all this tired old Spearheader can remember. Would like to hear from any of them or any other 143rd members from that time.

The 143rd Signal Battalion was my first permanant duty assignment. It was based at Edwards Kaserne on Hamburger Landstrasse in Frankfurt West Germany. I arrived at Charlie Company as a private straight out of ait. I was 18 years old with a high school diploma to my name.I was terrified at first, but I grew up in the two years I spent there. When I left there I knew Frankfurt better than the back of my hand. I still miss it. I spent a few months on UP (unit police) (gate guard). I remember that one day when I was on the back gate of Edwards (adjacent to Edwards Housing)the division commander, BG Nutting came through on his way to his office on Drake Kaserne. I was nervous but I saluted him and he stopped to talk to a lowly private E-2. Five minutes after he left I didn't remember what he asked me but he made me feel important.

Wow!! This site really brings back some long-buried memories. It was great to see the pictures, especially of the Edwards gate. I was a 31Mike assigned to A company, arriving in March (I think) of 1976. I was one of the first women assigned to a line company, but not THE first by any means. There were already a handful of women there when I arrived, and some of them had been there more than a year, so I think the line companies were actually integrated (gender-wise) around 1975. By the time I left in 1979, there were some more women but not a lot. A couple in each platoon, that was it. I ended up being attached to HHC and working in S-2 and later also S-3. It seemed like we were constantly in the field all winter and mostly hung around in garrison during the good weather. (Except for Reforger and sometimes, Hohenfels.) I was the one who taped together and colored in that huge topo map that took up an entire wall in the S-3 office, if anyone from the 80's remembers that. What a job, it took months! Came out nice though. ;-) Honestly I wasn't a huge fan of winter maneuvers, the constant (it seemed) night jumping and pounding stakes into frozen ground, but I must say that it made everything that followed look easy by comparison. I remember going up the hill to the Freidburg training area in a snowstorm, and having every other truck or so slide off into the ditch. Then the call would get passed back for people to come and help push/pull the truck and trailer out of the slippery ditch. It took all day just to get one company up that hill! Then up at the top there'd be little German cars sitting there... :-D - a lot of the guys in our unit were from the south and hadn't driven in snow before. Okay, well, it's a great site and very well done. I showed my (relatively new) husband some of the pictures, since I don't really have any from that time period, and will show them to my kids later (after school). Thanks for putting it up!

Great web site. I really enjoyed my time in the 143rd, lots of great people and memories everything from LTC Cox and his toy soldier BB gun range to one of my LTs in A Co getting his platoon stuck up to thier axels in the mud at the sportzplat and having to get the BMO to tow the entire platoon out - which didn't seem quite so funny at the time.

Hello Fellow signal soldiers. It was great running into this site. I really enjoyed my time at Drake/Edwards and its diffcult to explain the feeling I have thinking about my time and the people I meet there. I rememberd Capt. McKenzie when I was there and then I can't remember some. I remember Odell Johnson and SSG Winn and a host of others that were assigned with me. It would really be nice if I could hear from some of the old timers. I learned so much and grow up a lot at the 143rd. I was just a baby then and owe my military career to some really good NCO's. I returned to Drake/Edwards back in 1983 and much to my surprise some folks were still there. They was really surprise that one I was still in the army and two that I was a NCO. I worked in the RATT section of the 2nd platoon and my first team chief was SGT Susie Dean. I thought that she was crazy at one point, but looking back she was a good NCO. I notice I don't see many people from my era on the web page. Do any one remember the RATT school out of the basement? I have a lot of memory of my time there. Keep up the good work you guys are doing. Just like I came across this site others will also. I was blessed to have only had to partiapate in the cold war but I remember the bomb threats and the terrosit activity back then. But somehow we all did our jobs and lived our lives. I haved retired now and the only job I had in 22 and a half years was a signal solider. It all started for me at the Charlie company.

Probably the most memorable 6 years of my life were spent with the 143d sig. bn. and as most likely the longest assigned wrecker operator for the battalion I still wonder how in the hell some of you silly "antenna heads" managed to park your vehicles upside down or on their sides in some of the places you did .Don't get me wrong I enjoyed every minute of my time on and off duty with you all. If ever a chance were to come up to do it all again I definitely would and hope that everyone I came in contact with feels the same ....can't wait for a reunion hope to see some of you there. 1985-1991 B.M.O.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Some lawmakers -- Democrats and Republicans alike -- demanded answers Thursday from the White House after disclosures that the federal government might have missed several pre-September 11 clues that suggested the United States would be the subject of a terrorist attack. Great to see someone has taken the time to put our history on the web. I co-authored the article from the Army Communicator that is posted on this site, reading it again really brings back some memories. After we returned to Germany, I moved to Bad Kreuznach with 1SG Thomas and the remainder of B Co. where we became C Co., 141st Signal Bn. Seeing how things were done in Bad Kreuznach made us very proud of the standards we maintained in the 143rd. I got out of the Army in 1993, and spent some time back in Germany with Deloitte Consulting from 1999 to 2000. Currently living in Atlanta GA. It is great to see some old names on this site. I was wondering if anyone knows whatever happened to AC (SFC Arthur C. Coley probably CSM by now or retired I would guess). Would love to hear from anyone.
