From Webmaster Dan: Even though the holidays are almost over, a message from home will always be appreciated by those still serving.
Any
Service member mail. Send a special holiday message to our men and
women in the military defending American freedom worldwide.
Since 1967, when Sgt. Billy Thompson wrote Abigail Van Buren and mentioned that
a wonderful Christmas present to our armed forces would be "just a letter
from home," American citizens have been sending holiday wishes to
servicemen and women stationed overseas every holiday season. Dubbed
"Operation Dear Abby," the program has brought holiday joy to hundreds
of thousands of U.S. military personnel deployed away from home.
Concerns about mail delivery have prompted the military to suspend this year's
letter-writing campaign. However, the United States Department of the Navy's LifeLines2000
Services Network in association with SPAWAR
SCC-NCR is providing this private
and secure online resource that will allow you to send a Sailor, Marine,
Soldier, Airman or Coast Guardsman a holiday greeting.

[Webmaster Dan-I've received [via email] this request for patches, crests etc.]
Hi Dan I am a collector. I collect Crest, Coins and Patches from all Army, National Guard and Reserves. Plus a few other tidbits. See below. And You may call (anytime) if You prefer. I don,t mean to ask for something that You don,t have or have never seen. How about the crest and patch You are wearing. Or those You have squirreled away in the drawer and forgot about until now. Don,t get Yourself in trouble but I will take anything that You would care to send. Let me know if You can help. I will truly appricate it.
I was in the Army for 23 years. I served from 16 Dec.1959 until 31 Jul.1983. I served with the 5th SFG(A), 7th SFG(A) and 10th SFG (A) until I got out in 83. I went to work in April 83 until 16 Jun. 1994, that was when I was hit with a (bad) stroke. There wasn,t any pain but I nearly lost my life. It was some thing else. I am up and around now but I still can,t drive, or any thing like that. My whole right side was effected. I am stuck here doing this, collecting crest. I don,t have much luck, but I try harder! Airborne, I wish I could again!

God bless Danny for giving us the opportunity to contact old friends. We roomed together in BK (got into a little trouble with the girlfriends one night- sorry Rosie) and hooked up again at Ft Ord. I would love to hear from anybody who would care to drop me a line. Dabney...where the hell are you? I heard from Doc (we ran into each other at The American Legion in Killeen where I bartend) that Boughton has written a book of poetry. Drop me a line my old friend. Morrow (another roomie at BK) where are you? Anybody out there from EMBO? I remember so much, but yet so much time has gone by that I'm a little foggy on details. I know I had a great time with all of you (rolling home from John's!!!) and I owe sincere apologies to some (you know who you are... I'll never forget, I still feel awful) I'm so glad that some of you have gone on to become successful, as a starving artist I'm still waiting for my shot, but I can't complain...I'm doing what I love. I got out when I pcs'd to Ft Hood (hung out with Ayers, where's he at) went home to Maine, had a daughter who is now seven and lives in California with her mother, who happens to be somewhat of a porn star now (boy can I pick em or what) I've been mostly traveling the country since I got out, too much moving around in the Army, now I can only last about two years in one spot before I get restless. I've gone from coast to coast and met a wonderful lady in Ca. We married in Colorado, and had a son (yeah there's a mini me) while we lived in Ohio. Ironically, she enlisted and got stationed at Ft Hood. Never imagined I'd be back here. But now were separated, I'm bartending, dabbling in my new love, photography and still waiting for that "great gig in the sky" So much to catch up on. Drop me a line. "Shine on you crazy diamonds" Oh, yeah, and Spearhead, dammit!!

All,
The letter listed below has been circulating around the military community since late last week. I thought I would share it with you if you haven't seen it yet.
Steve
An open letter to a terrorist:
Well, you hit the World Trade Center, but you missed America. You hit the Pentagon, but you missed America. You used helpless American bodies, to take out other American bodies, but like a poor marksman, you STILL missed America.
Why? Because of something you guys will never understand. America isn't about a building or two, not about financial centers, not about military centers, America isn't about a place, America isn't even about a bunch of bodies. America is about an IDEA. An idea, that you can go someplace where you can earn as much as you can figure out how to, live for the most part, like you envisioned living, and pursue Happiness. (No guarantees that you'll reach it, but you can sure try!)
Go ahead and whine your terrorist whine, and chant your terrorist litany: "If you cannot see my point, then feel my pain." This concept is alien to Americans. We live in a country where we don't have to see your point. But you're free to have one. We don't have to listen to your speech. But you're free to say one. Don't know where you got the strange idea that everyone has to agree with you. We don't agree with each other in this country, almost as a matter of pride. We're a collection of guys that don't agree, called States. We united our individual states to protect ourselves from tyranny in the world. Another idea, we made up on the spot. You CAN make it up as you go, when it's your country. If you're free enough.
Yeah, we're fat, sloppy, easygoing goofs most of the time. That's an unfortunate image to project to the world, but it comes of feeling free and easy about the world you live in. It's unfortunate too, because people start to forget that when you attack Americans, they tend to fight like a cornered badger. The first we knew of the War of 1812, was when England burned Washington, DC to the ground. Didn't turn out like England thought it was going to, and it's not going to turn out like you think, either. Sorry, but you're not the first bully on our shores, just the most recent.
No Marquis of Queensbury rules for Americans, either. We were the FIRST, and so far, only country in the world to use nuclear weapons in anger. Horrific idea, nowadays? News for you bucko, it was back then too, but we used it anyway. Only had two of them in the whole world and we used 'em both. Grandpa Jones worked on the Manhattan Project. Told me once, that right up until they threw the switch, the physicists were still arguing over whether the Uranium alone would fission, or whether it would start a fissioning chain reaction that would eat everything. But they threw the switch anyway, because we had a War to win. Does that tell you something about American Resolve?
So who just declared War on us? It would be nice to point to some real estate, like the good old days. Unfortunately, we're probably at war with random camps, in far-flung places. Who think they're safe. Just like the Barbary Pirates did, IIRC. Better start sleeping with one eye open.
There's a spirit that tends to take over people who come to this country, looking for opportunity, looking for liberty, looking for freedom. Even if they misuse it. The Marielistas that Castro emptied out of his prisons, were overjoyed to find out how much freedom there was. First thing they did when they hit our shores, was run out and buy guns. The ones that didn't end up dead, ended up in prisons. It was a big PITA then (especially in south Florida), but you're only the newest PITA, not the first.
You guys seem to be incapable of understanding that we don't live in America, America lives in US! American Spirit is what it's called. And killing a few thousand of us, or a few million of us, won't change it. Most of the time, it's a pretty happy-go-lucky kind of Spirit. Until we're crossed in a cowardly manner, then it becomes an entirely different kind of Spirit.
Wait until you see what we do with that Spirit, this time.
Sleep tight, if you can. We're coming
