"The red of our country's flag was made redder still by his heroism; the white, more stainlessly pure by the motives which impelled him; and, in the starry field of our nation's glorious banner; the blue has been glorified by the service he has given for American ideals."

The flag on the casket is folded. Precisely, over and over. At the end just the stars show.

And he hands the flag, like it is a delicate piece of the freedom it symbolizes, to one who remains. He looks into her eyes. The wife, the son, the daughter, the father.

"On behalf of the government of the United States of America, ... I am honored to present you with this flag of our country, under which your husband has so honorably and faithfully served."
A battlefield symbol, the rifle and helmet mark the spot of a fallen comrade.1
