Many of you have said you had some pictures for the site-we'd like to see them.

Here's the deal, scanning is incredibly time-consuming, as is renaming and resizing image files.  I really don't have the time available to scan your stuff and ship it back to you, so here's some easy steps:
  1. Make a folder with your last name on it.
  2. Scan the images, save them as JPG's and name them yourlastname1.jpg, yourlastname2.jpg, etc.  See Rename Multiple Files below, for an easy way to do this.
  3. Resize your images.  See Image Resizer below for an easy way to do this as well.  I usually try to get images to be close to the original 3"x5" or 5"x7" size if possible, whatever the pixels turn out to be.  I then create the thumbnails in FrontPage.
  4. Then make a text file, in notepad, with numbers and descriptions matching the pictures.  Include any comments you want on the page.
  5. Put the images and text file into the folder.
  6. Create a compressed archive [zip file] no larger than 5 MB.  If you have more images, create another zip and send as a separate email.
  7. Scan your computer for viruses infection and spyware prior to sending anything.
  8. Email me first to let me know how many files you're sending and an approximation of how much [total MB] you're sending.  Send the images separate from the first email to give me time to make sure I have room in my inbox.

Thanks in advance.

These tips work in Windows XP Pro [if you have a MAC, please don't email to tell me you hate Windows]:

Image Resizer
This Windows XP PowerToy enables you to resize one or many image files with a right-click.

  1. Download it.
  2. Install it.
  3. Resize images BEFORE you send a gigantic file via email.
Rename Multiple Files

Have you ever wanted to rename a bunch of files at the same time? Maybe you've collected a bunch of pictures under different names and you want to give them a common name related to a project you're working on. Check this out:

  1. Open the Windows Explorer and find the directory (folder) containing the files you want to rename. All the files you want to rename have to be in the same folder.
  2. Click on the first file. Then hold down the CTRL key and click on the other files you want to rename. If you want to rename all the files in the folder, press CTRL and then press the A key while still holding down the CTRL key (the shorthand for this key sequence is CTRL+A).
  3. Now that the files are selected, click the File menu and then click the Rename command. Type in the new name of the file. Note that it will appear as if you're just changing the name for a single file. Don't worry about it. Just rename the file and press [ENTER].
All the files are renamed. The first one has the name you typed, and subsequent files have (1), (2), etc. after the name.
