All remote elements returned to the143rd Signal Battalion. Convoying back to Saudi Arabia, the unit was able to see some of the carnage on the outskirts of Kuwait. After leaving Dammam and heading into the desert, and the following war, the highway back seemed too easy.
The 143rd moved to Khobar Towers, [the same place which was later bombed by terrorists] and spent several days scrubbing vehicles and eating Wolfburgers [if you don't know, you weren't there].
After the vehicles passed the shipping inspection, some free time was available to shop in the areas little malls and markets. The battalion redeployed from Saudi Arabia on 18 May, 1991, with some troops staying as late as June 1991 and beyond.
Returning to Frankfurt, the unit briefly became a part of the 22nd Signal Brigade.
In August of 1991, the unit was ordered to move to Bad Kreuznäch, Germany, to become the third area company of 8th Signal Battalion, 8th Infantry Division. Troops from throughout the battalion were consolidated into one company. By November 1991, the move was in progress. The143rd Signal Battalion cased it's Colors in Frankfurt äm Main in a small ceremony on Drake Kaserne. [This link will open in a new window].
On 26 November 1991, the 8th Signal Battalion was redesignated as the 141st Signal Battalion, 1st Armor Division, Old Ironsides, and this company was redesignated as C Company thus blending the lineage and heritage of three signal units into one.
The 141st has a long and proud history dating back to the 1st of June 1940, where it was first activated at Fort Knox, Kentucky, as the 7th Troop (Mechanized). It was redesignated as the 47th Signal Company (Armored), assigned to the 1st Armored Division stationed in Europe.
17 January 1992: The 3rd Armor Division cased its colors at Drake Kaserne in Frankfurt. The unit was among the first to land at Normandy in WW II, and was the last combat division to leave the Persian Gulf area.
The 8th Infantry Division cased it's colors the same day in ceremonies held in Bäumholder ending 35 years of service in Europe and transferred it's soldiers to the 1st Armor Division, headquartered in Bad Kreuznäch.
