Cease-Fire

28 February 1991

Cease-Fire was declared by coalition forces after the 100 hour ground advance had devastated the Iraqi defenses.

3 March 1991

General Norman S. Schwartzkopf presented the conditions for the cease-fire, which were accepted by Iraq in a meeting of military commanders at Safwan Airfield, Safwan, Iraq.  The Cease-Fire conditions were based on the UN Security Council resolution issued one day prior.

March-May 1991

The 3AD's mission changed to Humanitarian Aid efforts.   Processing Iraqi POW's and providing medical assistance to refugee  were among the units tasks.

The 143rd Signal Battalion began providing morale support through a communications link back to stateside long-distance operators.  3AD troops were able to call their families back home from a telephone patched into the SEN.  Redeployment of units to their US locations began.  The 3AD, based out of Germany had less time in country that their stateside counterparts.

So...

The division was tasked again, this time on orders to maintain control over the area until the UN forces could take over.   Combining parts of the 1st [the Rock] and 3rd [Thunder] Brigades, the 3AD created "Camp Thunder Rock", named after the brigades mottos.  A Node Center and enough remote site personnel were assigned to support Thunder Rock.  Camp Thunder Rock was later renamed Camp Doha.
