Edwards Kaserne, December 1990

Screen Captures from a Video by Dan Ortíz, December 15, 1990 at Edwards Kaserne.

The Gate

2 Days, 2 Nights & 2 Days off.  At approximately 30 day stints, the Unit Police was one of the many [Hey, you!] tasks a signal soldier was expected to rotate through along with CQ and Duty Driver.  Kaserne security and Flag Detail were among your responsibilities.  At various times during the Cold War, terrorist threats both local and international would have the UP guard in Helmet and Frag Vest.  Basic Daily duties were to maintain security by checking the identification papers of anyone entering the Kaserne.

Baghdad or BUST!

At long last-the video of Edwards Kaserne, in 1990.  It's like going back in time...

A moderate snowfall had barely been disturbed, so I wrote "Baghdad or Bust" in the snow on the basketball court.  The basketball court had been previously covered by the bubble gym for several years.  The bubble gym had been used to store "stuff".  The Bravo Company [ the largest building] building had been condemned as unfit to live in beginning with the NCO quarters in the attic [around 85-86?].  This area was closed off around 86-87.  In 88 or 89 we moved to Drake Kaserne [the building closest to the Prüengesheim station & Hömburger Lanstraße].  B Co.'s building underwent a massive and expensive renovation.

In either late 89 or early 90 we moved back to Edwards.  No matter which side of the street we lived on, the mess hall was always on the other side.  The new Dining Facility on Edwards was rarely open, then closed unexpectedly and never reopened.  We had our "Welcome Back" celebrations there when troops came back from the Gulf War.

The rooms on the end of the building became latrines and the latrines in the middle became NCO rooms.  No-Wax floors were installed in the hallways and 110 V outlets were added to each room.  The bar in the Day Room was just a memory, but a new mailroom in the basement allowed soldiers secure access to their mail at all hours [combination locks].  The project cost around $10 million, I once heard.

See the Kaserne as it was November 2000, July 2001and October 2005.
